About Lynley

It was her love for her family which inspired Lynley to discover new ways to not only teach her children, but also build a strong bond which have lasted the test of time.

Lynley Bromwell is a mother, a teacher and pioneer in the world of home learning. She dedicated the last 25 years of her life to raising, caring and teaching not only her kids but those of her friends and family as well.

In the early years of her daughters lives she decided that the best way to bond with her kids is spending time with them and encouraging them to learn about the world around them. Through real world experience and observation she developed learning techniques which, only now, experts and researchers are discovering. She is a living testament to the age old adage “a mothers know best”.

It was never her plan to create a new curriculum or become an authority in the world of home learning, but through years of dedication to her craft and caring and teaching kids has made her just that. In her community she is a trusted advisor and friend who is always willing to help. She has become the Mum that other parents go to for advice.

After a lifelong passion for learning and education she decided to share her discoveries and learning techniques with other parents who could benefit from the love and care she gave her own kids.

I thought it would help other mums in their journey bonding with their kids. It just felt right.

After her daughters left home and started their own lives, Lynley felt it was time to help other mums bond with their kids through play and learning. She had a wealth of knowledge and experience after spending over 15 years teaching young kids and didn’t want that to go to waste.

Lynley has always been an active member in her community who spends a lot of time helping at church and assisting other people live better lives. Coming from humble beginnings herself she knew that she had been blessed with a good life and good family. It was for this very reason that she has dedicated the last 15 years putting together her play based home learning courses for the benefit of others.

I was overjoyed when I discovered that the methods I used to teach my kids were being used by other mothers.

I always said that play and interaction was the future of learning, and now it’s becoming a reality”.

When Lynley first started teaching her kids, the education systems available were outdated and didn’t allow for interaction and play. They lacked personality and love, something which she felt was the most important part of connecting with her children. She wanted a way to not only help her kids to learn but also to bond with them and teach them simple things like manners and etiquette and how to get along with others. The systems at the time seemed authoritative and didn’t allow for personal growth.

I wanted my kids to discover their own love for learning. If they gained that then I felt I had done a good job

Now after many years of dedication to helping other Mums with their learning journeys and empowering them to take charge of their kids futures, Lynley has released her own home learning courses.

Why I Created Lynley’s Reading School

by Lynley Bromwell

My name is Lynley and I am the creator of Lynley’s Reading School home tutoring courses.

I have two beautiful daughters Emily and Ruby. In 1998, Emily, my eldest daughter, attended pre-primary school and shortly after started in primary school. Then, at the age of five and a half years old, she came home one afternoon and told me she did not want to go to school anymore.

Day by day she became more and more upset and finally, very concerned, I listened to her. She wasn’t enjoying school and I knew she wasn’t actually really understanding much of what she was being taught.

I had no idea what to do, so, in a final effort to get answers, I decided to call the Education Department. They were very helpful and told me they had a department which handled “Home Schooling” and that it was totally ok to teach your child in your own home.

I was nervous and excited at the same time but was very keen to give it a go. This was an opportunity for me to help my daughters and ensure they got the education they deserved!

And that’s how my girls and I started our Home Schooling adventures. It was an amazing and life changing experience, not only for my children but also for myself. I was able to HELP my children and show the world that I was a great mother (not that I needed to prove myself!!).

When I first started out I tried a number of different ‘methods’ which, for some reason, were never quite effective at teaching my children to read effectively.

Progress was slow and they would feel deflated after only a few minutes of a lesson. In 15 minutes they were irritable and wanted to go outside to play and had no interest in learning. I felt there was something very wrong here.

After reading through all the available materials and educating myself on how to not only teach, but also to learn, I realized that these different ‘methods’ all lacked the one basic fundamental of the English language—they all assumed the child had some level of reading before starting!

It was a hidden idea because it never occurs to any person who can read themselves, that letters and words are just ‘weird shapes’ on a page! This one fact changed the game of educating my children and teaching them to read.

I went ahead and created an entire course on letters and how they looked and sounded and how to use them. This was the missing link in teaching a child to learn to read. I’d discovered the holy grail of learning to read!

With this known, I was then able to work out “what’s next” when it comes to non-comprehension and difficulties in learning to read. Each step of the way, I trialled out new things with my children and if they ever got confused, I figured out what they were confused about and created a new method of teaching that point, to full understanding.

This then stacked on top of each other, until I eventually had a full set of courses and my girls became little geniuses!

When my family and friends started to see the change in my own children, in their behaviour, their happiness, their love for reading, for learning and enthusiasm for life, they all started asking questions about how I did it.

Initially I thought I’d only be teaching my own children but in a short time I was schooling up to 10 children at a time! I was in my element. I could do what I loved and was overjoyed that I was able to help the people who were most important to me.

For years I kept refining and improving the reading courses until I could finally and without a doubt in my mind, guarantee that no child would ever “fall through the cracks” in the education system. I could guarantee that every child, without a shadow of a doubt, could go from whatever literacy level they were currently at and be taught effectively to read on a gradient, until they were fluent and expert readers.

Some years ago, the Home School Moderator (the person from the Education Department who checks the progress of your child), was so impressed with the progress I’d made with all the children I had home schooled, that she told me that I should make the Reading Courses available for anyone to use because they were the best she had ever seen.

I was inspired and over the moon that someone else thought these courses could help and that I now had an opportunity to help others with their children too.

I set to work to codify and collate the courses into an easy to follow, able-to-be-done-by-anyone, home tutoring and home schooling program. Both of my gorgeous daughters, who were now grown and prospering young adults, loved the idea of also helping others and jumped on board to help.

Ruby, my youngest, has a talent for drawing and wanted to illustrate the readers and Emily, my very first graduate, got her hands dirty and learned everything there was to know about self publishing, printing, typesetting and binding of printed materials and the three of us combined (with the help of their patient and proud father Andrew) created what is now known as Lynley’s Reading School.

I made these courses very easy to do and teach. If you can read and write, then you can teach your own child to read and write. It’s really that simple. And if your child can read well, they will be able to learn anything.

My life as a home schooling mother has rewarded me much more than I could have ever imagined when I first started out. I sincerely want to encourage every parent who is considering doing it, that they do so. It really is so rewarding! It will literally change your life and that of your family and future generations.

My daughters are now adults, they have a very good command of the English language and each of them have fulfilling careers. I have taught more than 10 other children over the years as well and all of them are doing well in their careers and further education.

If you do not Home School your child, these courses will allow you to fill in the missing gaps in your child’s schooling and give you the satisfaction of knowing that you have taught your child to read.

Doing these courses will add to or bring back the natural desire your child has to read and the desire to continue to learn throughout their lives.

Good luck with your adventure and please feel free to contact me at any time.
